John Randolph Medical Center, established in 1915, is located in Hopewell, about 30 minutes south of Richmond. Our clinical services reflect the warmth and personalized atmosphere of a small-town hospital, with the sophistication and cutting-edge technology commonly found only in much larger urban hospitals. John Randolph Medical Center is a licensed, 147-bed facility, offering acute care inpatient and outpatient services. Staffed and managed by neighbors and friends, the hospital provides compassionate care and focuses on what’s important to the community it serves.

A History of Growth & Change

John Randolph Medical Center

Through the years John Randolph Medical Center has grown along with the community it serves, adding services, technology and highly skilled professionals to meet the area’s changing needs. Here’s a brief overview of how the hospital has advanced in the past 92 years.

  • 1915 Established as Hopewell Hospital, a 15-bed facility over Elder Drug Company on East Broadway.
  • 1920 Moved to North Sixth Street, where a boarding house was converted to a 20-bed hospital. Operated as Community Hospital after being leased to the community.
  • 1935 John Randolph Hospital, Inc., was formed. Broke ground for a new 20-bed hospital.
  • 1936 Opened new hospital built along the banks of the Appomattox River on the famed site of "Cawsons," the birthplace of John Randolph of Roanoke. Later expanded to 40 beds, with a fully equipped emergency room.
  • 1955 Established Hopewell Hospital Authority.
  • 1959 Added 40 beds, bringing the total number of available hospital beds to 80.
  • 1966 Completed a third floor addition on the riverside of the hospital, increasing the number of beds to 110.
  • 1969 Seven-bed Coronary Care Unit opened.
  • 1970 Completed second-floor East Wing addition, bringing hospital up to 150 acute care beds. Also renovated and expanded emergency, laboratory and radiology departments.
  • 1971 Opened John Randolph Nursing Home.
  • 1982 Began construction on a new 76,000-square-foot wing along the front of the hospital.
  • 1987 Opened Outpatient Surgery Department.
  • 1988 Renovated third floor to house Psychiatric Center.
  • 1988 Opened Work Evaluation Center.
  • 1990 Broke ground on Physical Therapy Department and a chemical dependency program.
  • 1995 Sold to HCA - The Healthcare Company.
  • 1996 Completed new third floor along front of hospital to house The Family Life Center.
  • 1997 Renovated and expanded Emergency Department/ICU/Radiology.
